WHOO HOO, I'm going to dominate that money phrase, "Is pagerank finite?" But seriously, you're right I rarely see google groups in the SERPS except for obscure terms like people's posting name. It would be a good business decision obviously for them as they show a few million adsense impressions hourly and the money goes 100% to google then, not splitting the revenue with the content providers...and people wonder why they buy things like youtube??? It's like the ad agency owning it's own billboards, sell the ads, design the ads, host the ads.

This adds to the great nofollow debate. Is it even ethical or "non-evil" to nofollow content when it's not written by the site owner? Doesn't the site at least owe it's contributers a credit by link if they are not getting compensated in any other way? Google groups would be one big empty database if it weren't for the members who write the content for free. Google provides the framework, the navigation, and the hosting. The content, which all of these pages will be found in natural searching was written by someone else, and google gets to show their ads next to it.

Not that I'm going to have the problem in my little blog, but if I were a popular blogger and had a blog that generates hundreds of comments on my posts I'd feel compelled to at least let those links be followed as more than the majority of the page wouldn't have been written by myself. As I did with this post, the writter of the content get's a link close to his/her words.

Something interesting is happening with Google Groups, your site is #1 for "Is pagerank finite" and I am #2 but if you check page #2 in the Google serps you see Google Groups ranking for "Is pagerank finite" also. Is Google Groups getting ready to unleash iteself in the organic SERPS? I have never seen Groups ranks...

Aaron, linking out to all your friends is smart as long as you do it within the content and the text surrounding the links is related to the link destination. Well, probably you should avoid links to some of your fellow SEOs, at least with a brand new site.

John, rearranging the quotes should prevent you from dupe issues. The thread itself is somewhat chaotic, and not that easy to follow, because questions and answers are spread in different posts, and the statements aren't ordered by topic. So when you structure the information, suppress the noise and link to the source you're fine with all dupe filters, because you've added value for your visitors. This works best when you acquire a few inbounds to this page.

HAHA!!! It will be interesting to see if you go supplemental.

At the moment I am thinking for new sites it is not smart to link out to all your friends, as you build link relationships and increase pagerank it is fine but this points to pagerank being finite.

*Head explodes*
