Where everyone knows your name…

posted in GWHG, SEO, Webmastering |

I need a new forum to hang my hat in. I’ve enjoyed the Google Webmaster Help Group for quite a while now, but it’s loosing its focus. The place has been inundated with retards trolls, and left for dead by Google*. No longer is it the wonderful place it once was that had insightful official information. That official information is now pretty much exclusively fed through non-official A-list SEO bloggers now or at their conferences around the bar.

I really enjoy the search engine standards discussion the most, so I’m trying to find a new active forum. I figure if Google isn’t going to be answering any more question officially I might as well make my contributions somewhere where some who needs the money is gaining from it. I get the feeling that Google is busy counting their money and not looking to improve their webmaster relations or be bothered with supporting us little people.

I’ve tried Digital Point and WebmasterWorld. WMW has a higher quality of posters, but you can’t discuss real world issues there so their search engine forums are worthless. Digital point will allow spirited discussion, but there are WAY too many idiotic questions that the intelligent stuff get’s hard to find. Been lurking about cre8asiteforums but the volume is so low its hard to get a discussion going, maybe after I get to know some of the players it will improve.

Any other suggestions? If you’ve got a favorite please post a comment so they at least get a link, and perhaps a new contributer (me). I love helping people and learning, not arguing and reading lies, so moderation is a must.

* I was putting together my final statistics of the group, but I got depressed and sad, so I scrapped it. Not only is Googler participation nil, but the once strong regulars are backing away. It’s hard not to when hourly the same trolls spew their lies unattested.

Sorry, not much help, I know… Seriously, I don’t know where else. I like the low noise of cre8asite and the very high level of conversation. With more people helping out, I’m sure more people would be asking :).

Funny you should mention that. I do have a domain sitting there doing nothing, http://www.googlewebmasterhelp.com/. Maybe a good candidate for me to start something like that.

Same in the german group where I had some fun today. It has a troll called luzie [Lucifer] flooding the threads with all sorts of BS, and no Googlers participating.

I’m still confident that Google will change that, so I don’t leave the GG completely. When you start your own Googlehelp forum please preserve my user name :)

I tried to gain some foothold in the German groups a while back, it’s amazing how much FUD is thrown around and how strongly people still believe all of that …. now those groups are crazy, absolutely. It went so far that I went off to contact some Googlers off the list to try to get some order into the group (which they did, but apparently not for the long run :-( ).

For the long haul they wrote a nice charter ;) The question remains who will enforce it … perhaps Stefanie and Uli or even Susan in their spare time?

Krauts are plain silly, hmm … most of them ;) If they don’t understand things either they rant that the system is broke or they live in faith and fear of an assumed system. What they never do online is thinking before posting or applying common sense. When Jesus came to Germany he looked around, whined bitterly and shouted “Oh Vater, schmeiss Hirn vom Himmel!”.

I’m not going to leave it completely, just not going to be Google’s moderator, they have more than enough money to pay someone to do that. If I see too much noise, I’ll back away for a while. I just pick and choose the people I want to work with more wisely. I’ve also decided to ignore the inane questions, Jonathon Simon can answer the how to upload a verification file ones.

As far as starting my own group, not sure about that. Forums are tough to get going, and I don’t have much of a personal following to bring to the game. I was just thinking about setting up a blog format, possibly just highlighting some of the better discussions brought up in GWH, but with much less noise.

Authors would be pre-approved and have the ability to start new topics, they would also own the adsense impressions on their own topic. In the comments the pre-approved authors would be shown differently (like mine are highlighted here), comments are preapproved and moderated as well. There will be no pissing matches or unsubstantiated claims allowed. Maybe pass people on to reconsiderationrequest.com where JohnMu has me thinking about doing some interesting stuff with.

Then again, perhaps a forum is a good thing, but I want revenue sharing involved, the people writing the most should receive some sort of compensation for their efforts. Maybe ads to services they provide or sites they are promoting as well?

Then someone would report me as a link seller!

Sorry you’re feeling down on GWH… I’m only a blow-in over there, but it was a nice place to try and help a little.

TBH the best thing about the place was conversing with guys like yourselves. I told many people that it was a great learning resource - some fantastic information on the group.

The noise and the trolling is becoming rather unbearable however :(
Just a shame that G has decided to let the place go.

Well, since the most annoying troll is somewhat quiet there’s a perspective at least. If that lasts for a while and I’m not that much swamped any more I’ll participate more.

It has been a bit quieter there lately, keeping my fingers crossed on that.

By the way, Adam is alive and well, or at least someone with his name is. He’s been spotted.

If you do find a place to hang out, let me know too please.

I don’t know that it is a case of “letting the place go” though, regarding the trolls, or just not being prepared to deal with it and never having had to in the past, not knowing how.

I’ve operated a number of forums in the past, some adult related and one thing I learned early, you either allow total freedom within boundaries and instantly and totally squash anything outside or your forum gets squashed itself.
