…I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum. I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum. That’s fit to give the King…

My displeasure with Google’s handling of the Webmasters Help Group is well known, and I am weary from trying to influence change, so weary in fact that I’ve been pretty much reduced to occasional lurking with a random post or two. There are others though, much more disciplined and forgiving than I am. For these people still holding on to the dream, I commend them, and though I am poor in resources and cannot thank them financially, I would like to offer them a link drop, for whatever that is worth.

So congrats to the following for trying to keep at least some signal in the noise filled shell of its former great self Google Webmasters Help Group.

Webado - Web Hosting and Design in Canada

Cass-Hacks - Powerful XHTML DHTML presentation and accessibility tools

Phil Payne - Website rescue, redesign and maintenance

Dockarl - BlixKrieg Wordpress Theme

JohnMu - Search Engine Tools

Sebastian - Links, Links, Links…

Red Cardinal - Search Engine Optimisation Ireland

Who did I miss?

I’m somewhat swamped, so I don’t post much to the troll’s hell. Spotting the mess at Matt’s blog I thought I could check in to GG again, but … (continued in “What’s wrong with this picture”)

Thanks, JLH. I appreciate it and will reciprocate it as soon as I can get my site working, ha!

I am hoping that the new “Marshal” in town may help. I see that SHE was pretty quick to nip one thread in the bud before it got too far although it seems often that the first post is already too far.

Who knows what will happen although one thing I do know, as often as I think I’m never going back, I keep scanning and seeing a number of threads in need of help so even though I feel fried to a crackly crisp, I don’t see myself stopping any time soon.

Don’t know whether to feel happy about that or sad.

Hey JLH, sorry I have been gone so long, thanks for keeping this issue up, I haven’t been there for so long, I do not know the current situation. Out of curiosity, did you get an email from Google?

Pat, I’ve gotten emails from Google, but nothing particularly ground breaking lately. Is there something I should know?

Craig, that’s why you’re on the list.

JohnMu, I see johnweb is for sale, i have too many domains as it is, don’t need another project. :)

Sebastian, swamped is ok sometimes too, we just need you in there telling it like it is occasionally to keep things on track.

I got an email from Google about sending me a T-shirt but I wasn’t sure if the email was for real =)

Since the blogosphere these days seems generally disinterested in SEO and the forums are kinda slow, GGWH could still be a reasonable alternative if it wasn’t so noisy. The group has plenty of colorful characters and reading rants is sometimes fun, but the lack of moderation creates an unprofessional forum that just sucks up my time with not much reward. I want to either learn something new or help people out - with the amount of noise its hard to do either, and I’m too busy right now to try.

But I admire you guys for continuing to contribute (and I’m sure Google appreciates you too).

Half, the T-shirt offer was indeed real. :)

SEO forums are having less and less to talk about because the “tricks” don’t work any more (sure some spamming and jamming works, but those guys don’t read your regular forums for tips). I look at it as a sign of quality. When the only advice anyone can give is that the best SEO advice is to not design the site for Google, then I think they’ve won the battle.

Agree on the professionalism of the forum. We don’t need censors, they need moderators, just people keeping things on track and on subject. Right now all they do is close offending threads but no steering of the ones that go astray.

I got the same e-mail. The headers looked correct for having come from the Google Plex but I didn’t give my address for sending a t-shirt to although part of the reason is I don’t wear t-shirts.

I did send a reply, minus the physical address that was requested, but never heard anything after that so I figured that was the end of that.

If it wasn’t just a phishing expedition, it was a nice gesture.
